Constant of motion for ideal grain growth in three dimensions

چکیده

Most metallic and ceramic materials are comprised of space-filling collections crystalline grains separated by grain boundaries. While this structure has been studied for more than a century, there few rigorous results regarding its global properties available in the literature. We present result three-dimensional structures that relates integral Gaussian curvature over boundaries to numbers quadruple junctions. The is numerically verified consisting periodic truncated octahedra.

Diffusion generated motion for grain growth in two and three dimensions

An efficient algorithm for accurately simulating curvature flow for large networks of curves in two dimensions and surfaces in three dimensions on uniform grids is proposed. This motion arises in the technologically important problem of simulating grain boundary motion in polycrystalline materials. In this formulation grains are zero level sets of signed distance functions. Curvature motion is ...

Collective motion of organisms in three dimensions

We study a model of flocking in order to describe the transitions during the collective motion of organisms in three dimensions (e.g., birds). In this model the particles representing the organisms are self-propelled, i.e., they move with the same absolute velocity v0. In addition, the particles locally interact by choosing at each time step the average direction of motion of their neighbors an...

Computer simulations of two-dimensional and three-dimensional ideal grain growth.

We developed an efficient computation scheme for the phase-field simulation of grain growth, which allows unlimited number of the orientation variables and high computational efficiency independent of them. Large-scale phase-field simulations of the ideal grain growth in two-dimensions (2D) and three-dimensions (3D) were carried out with holding the coalescence-free condition, where a few tens ...

Energy-efficient motion camouflage in three dimensions

Recent observations suggest that one insect may camouflage its own motion whilst tracking another. Here we present a strategy by which one agent can efficiently track and intercept another agent, whilst camouflaging its own motion and minimizing its energy consumption.

Self-regulation of Growth in Three Dimensions

Multi-cell spheroids were grown in soft agar. When each spheroid was cultured in a large volume of medium, frequently renewed, all spheroids eventually reached a dormant phase at a diameter of approximately 3-4 mm and a population of approximately 10(6) cells. In the dormant spheroid, newly generated cells at the periphery balanced those lost by necrosis in the center. We propose that this dorm...
